Johnson County Public Health World AIDS Day
2011
Promoting
Health. Preventing Harm.
The
Power of Partnerships:
Johnson
County Public Health & Iowa Center for AIDS
Resources and Education team up with area
providers to raise awareness around World
AIDS Day 2011
The
twenty-third annual World AIDS Day will be
observed around the world and in Johnson
County on Dec. 1, 2011. Locally, the events
for World AIDS Day will take place at the
Iowa City Public Library from 2:00-6:00pm
and will feature educational materials and
information from a variety of local sexual
health service providers as well as free
rapid HIV testing provided by Johnson County
Public Health. "HIV is still taking an
unacceptable toll on our population." said
Doug Beardsley, Johnson County Public Health
Director. "We encourage the entire community
to learn as much as they can to support
efforts to prevent the spread of HIV."
2011 marks
the 30th year since the CDC reported the
first AIDS diagnosis in the United States.
Over the past three decades the epidemic has
infected an estimated 33.4 million people
worldwide, 1.1 Million Americans, 2,000
Iowans, and over 200 Johnson County
Residents.
World AIDS
Day is about increasing awareness, fighting
prejudice and improving education. Although
HIV infection is preventable, every 9 1/2
minutes, someone in the United States is
infected with the virus. It is important for
everyone to get the facts, talk about
HIV/AIDS with partners and loved ones,
reduce risk behaviors, and get tested to
learn their HIV status. This joint effort
from the local agencies that all have a hand
in prevention and treatment will aim to
achieve these goals and keep the
conversation going throughout the year.
